looks like this particular record is set 
for almost 24h at mintaka. 

  $ dig +nocmd mitgcm.org  +noall +answer
  mitgcm.org.             85051   IN      A       128.31.2.31
                          ^^^^^
i've put ^'s under the answer (in seconds). 

for the short-term, i've put an entry for 
mitgcm.org at forge:/etc/hosts.
