Hi Pierre,
I don't thinks it's a problem to save the strain rates, I never bothered to add them to the diagnostics list, because I thought that since e_ij = .5*(du_i/dx_j + du_j/dx_i), you can easiliy recover them from you ice velocities (unless you are interested in time averages of high moments, of course).
Add them to the diagnostics list in seaice_diagnostics_init.F, and then it's probably easiest to store them (call diagnostics_fill) in seaice_calc_strainrates.F. If you think that this is useful to others as well, we can check this things into the main repository.
