Martin, you are correct.
For Greenland the grid has to be O(1km) or less to resolve the fjords and glacier outlets.
I have not given this very much thought from an ice-ocean physics perspective either.
I am responding to MITgcm code requests and requirements of Eric Rignot at JPL.  D.
