The Kara et al. criterion cannot work for SST near freezing point. For example,
at 10 deg C the Kara et al. criterion gives

> » disp(rho(35,10,0)-rho(35,10.8,0))
> 0.1403

a deltarho of 0.1403 kg/m^3, which is fine but at -1 deg C the Kara et al.
criterion gives

> » disp(rho(35,-1,0)-rho(35,-1.8,0))
> -0.0277

a "negative" delta rho! So I guess the Kara et al. criterion would have to be
modified with a minimum deltarho if it is to work at high latitudes.

> nice slam on dimitris in there....wow

It's OK. Most of the times the slams are well deserved. Not everybody can be
as perfect as CNH. D.
