Alistair, Chris, and Jean-Michel, the following figure:

http://ecco2.jpl.nasa.gov/data4/ATN_output/+temp/lsr_os7mp/s33_os7mp_diffKrT.eps

generated by An Nguyen shows impact of advection scheme (33 vs 7) and background
vertical diffusivity (1.4e-5 vs 1e-6) on vertical temperature stratification of
the Canadian Basin in the Arctic Ocean.

Blue lines represent mean temperature during the first month of integration,
which all start and hence remain very close to WGCH climatology (black line).
Green lines are after a year of integration and red lines are after two years of
integration.

Solid lines: advection = 33, diffkr = 1.4e-5 m^2/s
Dashed lines: advection = 7, diffkr = 1.4e-5 m^2/s
Dash-dot lines: advection = 7, diffkr = 1e-6 m^2/s

For advection = 33, decreasing diffkr from 1.4e-5 m^2/s to 1e-6 m^2/s has very
little impact on solution and is therefore not shown.

Conclusion is that advection scheme and background vertical diffusivity have a
huge impact on vertical stratification of the Arctic Ocean.

Dimitris
