Thanks for the reply.
it seems that the crond process (pid 3546) on ao was restarted
yesterday, Oct 19: 
-bash-2.05b$ ps u -p 3546
USER       PID %CPU %MEM   VSZ  RSS TTY      STAT START   TIME COMMAND
root      3546  0.0  0.0  2328  756 ?        S    Oct19   0:00 crond

propably after 1.am, and this explains why we missed 
the Thursday test. 

And regarding the every-day update of /home/edhill/local/bin/MITgcm,
everything looks normal, I was just confused with date-time 
reported by CVS (always off by 3-5 h ...).
