JM et al.  I apologize for "N3 > 150 cvs-checkin's".  As I do not subscribe to 
cvs mailing list, I did not realize that you get one e-mail per file.  I owe you 
beer, ice cream, etc, during next visit.

Temporary files in cygwin have a .for rather than .f extension.  So wherever you 
have a .f in a .cvsignore, it makes sense to also have a .for.  Other than that 
I do not have a strong preference but it seems to me that that your suggestion 
of focused .cvsignore files would be safer and preferable, i.e., *.o, etc., in 
build and bin, *.data, etc., in exe and build, and so on and so forth.
