Hi David,

OK, I suppose more profiling will be needed to see whats causing the
above.  Our two cases may not constitute a representative sample!

And in regards to rdmnc, I *am* using the very latest from:

  MITgcm/utils/matlab/rdmnc.m

and it *caused* the crash shown in the previous email.  So, while rdmnc
may work a bit faster on some examples, it is (in my experience, anyway)
less robust and a lot less capable since it will never handle the more
general topologies.
