Mat, sorry for not getting back earlier. I had seen the thread but did not have
anything immediately useful to say.

My latest hi-res model setup is here
http://mitgcm.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/MITgcm_contrib/high_res_cube/

In particular look at
http://mitgcm.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/MITgcm_contrib/high_res_cube/code-mods/SEAICE_OPTIONS.h
http://mitgcm.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/MITgcm_contrib/high_res_cube/input/data.seaice_hr

What I don't yet have in the setup but that is almost certainly needed is snow
advection.

I do get some thick ice in places near coastal regions but model does not crash
because of it. So my 3 blind comments:

1. your resolution is higher than anything I've tried ... but I'm pretty sure
that Tom Haine and Armin tried even higher. That was with B-grid and decoupled
ice/ocean, though.

2. Have you tried using the EVP solver. Probably faster in your configuration.

3. Then as Martin said, maybe you need to revert to original B-grid without ice
ocean coupling.

If you do pursue this, please let us know what happens.

Dimitris
