Hi Martin, I am answering you on devel list to get some feedback on 
where is the best place to store the hi-res cubed sphere input files. 
If you do not have access to Columbia, a copy of all the hi-res 
cubed-sphere input files are available at MIT under:

   orwell:/export/export-7/faulks-scratch/scratch/run_template/
   orwell:/export/export-7/faulks-scratch/scratch/ncep_rgau/

I put the files there for Alistair who requested them with short 
turn-around time.  But maybe a better and more permanent place is to 
copy them over to

   http://channel.mit.edu/datasets/MITgcm_input_files/

which Constantinos recently set up for this purpose.
