Andrea, thank you for reply.  As you point out, the problem I have is 
different from Baylor's in that I want to minimize the pkg/diagnostics 
global array size.  Before complaining, I did take a quick look at the 
code and came to conclusion that changing this part, as you confirm, was 
not for novices like me.  There already are some commented out SST, SSS, 
UVEL_k2, and VVEL_k2 diagnostics in the code that I could resurrect, if 
the larger size of the global arrays becomes a problem and if it's OK 
with JM.
