Hi Dimitris & Gael,

Andrea, Chris, and I talked about the variance precisions and the upshot
is that we're all a little too busy to implement them this week.  

So, the choices are:

 1) implement the std dev diagnostics yourselves within the 
      diagnostics package,
 2) write out the few fields needed at REAL*8, or
 3) use your "SALT-35" hack if you think it'll actually work
      -- but I suspect that it'll buy you *only* one additional 
      significant digit which is almost pointless, right?
