Hi folks,

Heres an updated version of the script that shows the problem exists
regardless of the magnitude of the variables!

Its a function of at least three things:

 (1) the ratio between the standard deviation of the variables
     and their means,
 (2) the fact that we do not have a priori knowledge of the
means (or we could compute stddev in a way that much
     handles finite precision), and
 (3) the number of significant figures in our finite-precision
     numerics (REAL*4 and REAL*8).
