KPP does not deal with bottom friction in any special way, at least not
in the MITgcm implementation.  Also I don't recall any special treatment
of bottom boundary layer in the Large et al. 94 and 97 papers.

Don't worry, I do not intend to touch that stuff.  It is way, way beyond 
my level of competence (as are most things ;-).  From your message and 
from my understanding of the code, it seems that current MITgcm bottom 
stress formulation is highly defficient.  I wonder what GFDL and NCAR do 
about this?  Wasn't Sonya experimenting with improved bottom friction 
parameterizations?
