Alistair, are the visc2leith and visc4leith parameters scaled by deltaT?
For example, if deltaT is halved, should visc2leith and visc4leith be
doubled in order to preserve comparable viscosity?

Some figures comparing surface currents
(2nd model level or 15-m depth) for four integrations:

1) NCEP-forced, visca4grid=2e-3
2) NCEP-forced, visca4grid=4.2e-4
3) NCEP-forced, visc4leith=.1
4) ERA40-forced, visc4leith=.1

are in http://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/cube_sphere/surface_currents/

GLOBAL[1-4].jpg are global maps of current speed for each of the four
integrations. The remaining figures zoom in on various regions. Arrows
indicate direction only and are plotted about every degree when current
speed is larger than 5 cm/s.

One way to really notice the differences is to move back and forth
between the GLOBAL*.jpg maps.

I am in process of carrying out a somewhat more quantitative comparison.
