Hi Patrick,

According to CF:

  http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/cms/eaton/cf-metadata/CF-current.html#sname

the:

  "...usage of 'long_name' is completely ad-hoc."

and:

  "A standard name is associated with a variable via the
   attribute 'standard_name' which takes a string value 
   comprised of a standard name optionally followed by 
   one or more blanks and a standard name modifier (a 
   string value from appendix C)."
   

So during our talk today, I should have said "standard_name" instead of
"long_name" when speaking of required attributes.  My apologies for any
confusion that might have caused!

And I'm working on the variable list and will send it as soon as its
complete.
