OK, so Chris has nailed down the re-creation dates above.  And we know
that, at the time, gcmpack was inside /usr/local.  So below is an email
from Jamie proving that /usr/local was copied from one drive to another
at more-or-less exactly the same time.

I think we have our explanation.

i copied over /usr/local (currently a symlink to /u/u3/local)
to /dev/sdf3.
