Yeah, we could do the string => int --> int => string conversion.  But
(as you said) its a *lot* more effort, complexity, and run-time overhead
than just compiling the NetCDF library for the correct compiler in the
first place.

And thorns to ANSI/ISO who failed us all when they didn't standardize
Fortran/C cross-language bindings!
