hi alistair,

i will have a look at the reconfiguration of all this.
but frankly if it works i don't see that i will have any
issue with it.

the unique names get used anywhere in the code where a
diagnostic is filled directly without using fill_diagnostics.
see, for example, fizhi_turb.F. changing all this code at this
point seems uneccessary.
