the way to do 'snap shot' diagnostics, at this point, is
to put an 'if' around the call - ie, only do the call
to fill_diagnostics at the frequency specified in data.diagnostics.
(with a mod with myiter and 'frequency' from the diagnostics
namelist, for example).
i can write a little utility routine to check whether it is time
to increment or not. although it may be better to do this inside
fill_diagnostics.
i guess it would not be too big a deal to put in an additional
flag in the diagnostics namelist, and have fill_diagnostic
check to see whether to increment the diagnostics array or not.
i could even just add the case for a negative frequency, ie,
specify a negative frequency and get instantaneous fields rather
than time averages. how does that sound?
