Alistair, thanks for phone call.  I am quite optimistic now.  I am
appending a figure that compares cfl numbers for the integration
that crashed on day 523 with the one that is ongoing and had
reached day 700 or so before the Altix went down.

The integration that crashed had:
deltaT=1200
viscA4=5e-3
diffKh[S,T]=50

The integration that is ongoing has:
deltaT=1200
viscA4=4e-3
diffKh[S,T]=0

Reducing horizontal diffusivity actually makes things better rather
than worse as you suspected.
