Alistair, that might be good news indeed!  The blow-up I reported
earlier occurs exactly at a cube boundary.  I thought this was
coincidental, since there also happens to be a sea-mount right there. 
But thinking back on series of crashes I've had, they very often have
happened near the edges ...

The exchange routines I am using for hi-res cube are exactly those of
exch2.

Chris, it's definitely worth taking a closer look!

I'll go ahead and test Alistair's mods, make sure I can reproduce what I
have so far.
