 o big improvement of variable assembly and slicing along the "time"
   dimension -- keep track of a global per-variable vector of "time"
   values where "time" may be any variable that is defined only 
   along the "time" dimension (eg. 'iter' is the default and specifies 
   model iterations but 'T' could be used wich specifies model time 
   values)
